Welcome to Kuwajima, a delightful café tucked away in the heart of Higashiyama in Kanazawa, Ishikawa. This charming spot is not just a café; it's an experience steeped in history and warmth, situated in a beautifully preserved 100-year-old building that once served as the home of a Geiko.

Stepping inside Kuwajima, you're greeted by an inviting atmosphere that combines rustic charm with cozy comfort. The scent of freshly prepared dishes fills the air, beckoning patrons to sit back and indulge. The menu may be modest in options, but that's part of the allure—every dish is crafted with care, ensuring that each bite is a flavorful journey. Customers rave about the café's incredible curry and juicy pork skewers served over rice, which exemplify the delightful simplicity and heartiness of home-cooked meals.

The real treasure lies in the café's unique ability to create a cultural experience. With a limited yet satisfying menu, meals come out one plate at a time, each dish reflective of the local culinary traditions. Diners have praised the Bocha set and Butanpo, a succulent combination of mashed rice paired with tender pork, making it a must-try for anyone seeking a genuine culinary adventure. Customer Alina Kulakova captures this perfectly, stating, "It is a small cozy place with amazing curry and pork on rice skewer. Does not have a lot of options but this is why it was SO delicious."

The atmosphere is further enriched by the café's owner, whose warmth and hospitality make every visitor feel right at home. Patrons not only leave with satisfied appetites but also with a charming memento—a personalized drawing created by the owner during their visit, as noted by Ron Fowler, "A very nice patron, who draws your picture as a souvenir of your visit with no charge."

Whether you are a local or a traveler eager to soak in the rich culture of Kanazawa, Kuwajima invites you to experience a slice of Japanese life blended with culinary delight. It's more than just a meal; it's a heartwarming experience that connects you to the region's heritage, leaving you with cherished memories and a fuller heart.

Cute little café with great people. They even draw you! Can really recommend this place. The building itself is a 100 years old.

This restaurant was previously house of Geiko. English menu seems not available, but in this cafe you can feel classic real life of people in this area. Not so popular but very good place to enjoy cultural experience! Bocha set (photo) and Butanpo (mashed rice and pork bar) is highly recommended!!)

The first Treasure I found in Higashi Chaya was this kind gentleman running a cafe out of his Grandmother's old house. If that sounds like like a recipe for an epically home cooked meal it is! The menu is limited, food comes out one plate at a time as it's done, and each dish is a hearty simple fare, you can almost hear a granny tell you to eat up because you're too skinny. There's only room for two parties (three max) on beautiful tatami flooring, a view of a babbling fountain and tree, and a charming creaking sound from the walls and screens when the winds blow. Best of all, there are no sign of any of the tourist madness...and no rush to eat up and finish. Take the family of four eating next to us for example. The mother felt absolutely comfortable enough to feed her baby while viewing the fountain. They also finished their lunch, had their plates cleared, and then ordered a few light dishes a little bit later. As for us, we found special delight with the sweet potatoe treat, the pork and rice sausage, the local black tea...and oh did I upgrade my curry rice experi nice here. This felt like curry rice I would have been served at a friend's house. Was it cooked from scratch? Did it come out of cubes or a packet? Who cares, it was comfort food supreme... Oh yes. And you absolutely have to check out this gentleman's manga collection if that's you're thing! We didn't have time to admire it sadly, but he was very excited to talk about it and show off what he could! 12/10. It doesn't get more genuine than this. I am telling all my nerdy friends and planning on stopping here next time I'm in town!

Such a relaxing homey place to take a break and drink some tea, located right next to the Higashi Chaya district, this place is free of the tourist crowds unlike other cafes in the area. The owner was bath friendly and knew a little bit English, they had an English menu when we came :)) we got some sweet adzuki mochi soup, ice tea and confectionary as well as a wonderfully freshly hand ground and brewed iced coffee. The weather was nice so the owner opened the door to the small garden, which was a nice touch.

We were so fortunate to wander down the right street and find this gorgeous cafe on our way back to our hotel. It was a rainy day and it was so cosy and lovely inside, we could have stayed all day. Must try the curry!! Yummy
